The new Brussels Gallery Portraits International marks one year of the war against Ukraine with a fund-raising exhibition of 12 Ukrainian artists showing original works and art prints. The exhibition curated by Claire Soper is organized in collaboration with Tsekh Gallery in Kyiv, the James Butterwick Gallery in London, and with the help of Art Dealer, Katia Vozianova and journalist/contemporary art researcher Iryna Belan.

Portraits of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be displayed in the gallery and auctioned online worldwide during the six-week exhibition. 100% of the auction proceeds will be donated equally to good causes. Portraits were newly made by this year’s gallery exhibitors Dutch painter Toon Teeken, Belgian Chilian artist Carlos Becerra and by other volunteers.
Portraits International is a new art gallery, bookstore, and academy, dedicated to the world of portraiture. Next to art, the gallery will offer biographies, lectures, courses, competitions, and team-building exercises in multiple languages, linked to the themes of the exhibitions. Portraitists, writers, and filmmakers can use the new gallery to find clients worldwide interested in commissioning a quality portrait or biography.

The long journey of these paintings was probably destined for them by fate: this exhibition includes 7 of my works from two series about the road – Broad Perspective and Kill bill. The history of both series began somewhere at the same time back in 2013 (!) both during the long car trip. Now it took almost a year, a big hook through Copenhagen, and getting to know a few more wonderful people, so that the works finally got to the Portraits International gallery for the Ukrainian 12 group exhibition, together with the graphics of Oleksandr Bogomazov (!) from gallery partner James Butterwick.
It is also symbolic that in 2022-2023, all physical movements from Ukraine to the West also became much longer because of the war, even more time and reason for deep immersion, the landscape outside the window relentlessly reminds me of my Stripes and Kill bill (I realized this back in the fall), not only from the window of a car, and now also a bus, and a train, and an airplane, because I continue to document the material for further works.

Цю не зовсім “серію”, але цикл з 10 робіт різного формату, я вважаю пророчою. Я її почала в кінці 2019 року, бо відчувала біль, наче я померла, і особисту кризу, яку ніяк не могла пояснити логічно. Закінчувала (і ніяк не могла закінчити, постійно поверталась до неї, допрацьовувала) аж до кінця 2021-го. Найстрашніше – це криза сенсів. Єдиним варіантом було спробувати подивитись в очі цим óбразам, від яких я значною мірою відвикла, займаючись дослідженням кольору і абстрактним мистецтвом впродовж попередніх 10 років. Цю серію я вважаю поверненням до реального життя, що містить складні стосунки, ерос і танатос, невимовне, передчуття незворотнього. На полотні крім олії, використовувала колажі, аллікації і бісер, що є давньою технікою в українському народному мистецтві (цяткування вишиванок) і став ідеальним інструментом сповільнення часу.
I consider this not quite a “series”, but a cycle of 10 works of various formats, to be prophetic. I started it at the end of 2019, because I felt pain, as if I had died, and a personal crisis that I could not logically explain. I finished it (and could not finish it at all, I kept coming back to it, working on it) until the end of 2021. The worst thing is a crisis of meaning. The only option was to try to look into the eyes of these images, which I had largely weaned myself off by doing color studies and abstract art for the previous 10 years. I see this series as a return to real life, which contains complex relationships, eros and thanatos, the unspeakable, the foreboding of the irreversible. In addition to oil, I used collages, appliqués and beads on the canvas, which is an ancient technique in Ukrainian folk art (embroidery of vyshyvanka) and became an ideal tool for slowing down time.

I am so impressed by this show The Art of Resistance at the @expos_artgemesi !
The photo with Sasha’s portrait is just a small part of the exhibition, which actually covers two floors of a very beautiful modern space with works by about 50 Ukrainian artists (special thanks and super respect to curators @pechenman and @y.stepanok, who did enormously great job and wrote ALL the names of the participants in Facebook event! 💛💙).
And I was personally very impressed to see this painting, printed for an exhibition probably 1-in-1 (yes, the original is still in Kyiv, but soon hope it will reach Western Europe). I was waiting for only small posters of the beginning of the war among my works there. @sasha.horbatiuk joked he has a feeling like he is in Valencia)

Ця серія виявилась пророчою і самореферентною, адже подорож стала її долею: з початком вторгнення вона поїхала спочатку в Копенгаген, частково залишившись там, а далі більша частина робіт поїхала у Брюссель. The series emerged from reflections on the peculiar condition of being in transit — a state of existing almost “nowhere.” As a passenger, the artist observed the passing horizon and shifting landscapes, using the time of travel as a rare pause from the constant flow of information and obligations.

Following the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the project acquired a new layer of meaning. The works now evoke a heightened sense of fragility and temporariness. In recent years, the symbolic meaning of movement has changed profoundly. While travel may still offer expanded perspectives and opportunities — particularly for artists — it has also become more complicated and exhausting. With air travel unavailable from Ukraine, journeys have grown longer, familiar routes to the south remain inaccessible due to occupation, and some landscapes captured in these paintings may remain out of reach for years to come.

In a self-referential turn, travel became the fate of the series itself. After the invasion began, the works first traveled to Copenhagen, where some remain, and later continued to Brussels. Through this journey, the project has connected the artist with new communities as well as long-standing friends who offered support along the way. The perspectives — and the journeys — continue.

Art and factory: look to the production

‘Production’ is a word with many meanings. It can refer to the making of something, or to a final product like a performance. It can be the process of bringing a song or musical work to life. Or honing that work to perfection. ‘Production’ might conjure images of factory production lines or the theories of Karl Marx. Production is labour, capital, and the invisible groundwork of modern society. And it can be as simple as making a clay pot with your hands. Production is at once mechanical and biological – think of ‘reproduction’ – and ultimately human.

Production is at the heart of making art. Artists and theorists have long acknowledged its importance as both an artistic action and an idea to be explored. And as the role of production has shifted in our lives, so have the ways which artists have responded to it. While some contemporary artists foreground production as a tool, others use their work to explore ideas around production we might otherwise overlook.

Painters and sculptors of the 1960s sought a more mechanized “look” for their art. The changes reflected in the art have their source in a deeper shift – a shift at the level of production, expressed in new studio practices as well as in the space of the artworks themselves.

In the period immediately before, during, and after World War II, the dominant peack of the artist’s career was genius, been alone in studio, witness of creation of own art. Since 1960s, against of heroic modernism, engaged in a different rhetoric and practice, one based on the models of industry and business. The studio of Andy Warhol, named the “Factory,” is viewed as great change, with its rudimentary assembly line and highly social mode of production.

Warhol’s Factory became “place of knowledge” – the space with Warhol’s paintings and objects, and the new social space in which they signify. The context for that signification thus becomes crucial to our understanding of the “Warhol phenomenon” celebrated in popular and arthistorical texts. The ambivalencies embedded in Warhol’s Factory, where the artist’s role oscillated between manager and proletarian worker, are seen as a function of their context. Conflicting signals are also broadcast by the works of art, which speak in the dialect of mass production with the accent of the irreplaceably unique.
