  • Alena Kuznetsova is a professional multidisciplinary artist born in 1986, who lives and works in Kyiv, Ukraine.


  • Her artistic practice engages with ecological and feminist perspectives, focusing on the fragile balance between humans and nature in contexts shaped by environmental transformation, conflict, and displacement. The artist is particularly interested in how these conditions generate new forms of interdependence, vulnerability, and resilience.


  • Participated in Ukrainian and international shows and is an author of 14 solo projects. Her creative work includes painting, graphics, video, installation, photography, text art, and ceramic sculpture. Alena’s artistic practice has changed a lot since 2022.


  • She’s been focusing mainly on abstract painting and color research from 2008 to 2021. Her art has changed critically with the full-scale invasion. Alena came out to her international audience and colleagues with a war agenda and began volunteering a lot as a talking head and in written interviews, spreading the word. The artist came back to social issues in recent projects since 2022: Ukraine is Me, To the River, Flowers or Explosions, Broad Perspective, Nearly Three Years, Horizontal Links.

If these are small, lightweight artworks (small-scale paintings or framed graphics): You can use special adhesive hooks (like Command strips) that stick well to painted surfaces. However, be cautious with custom-painted or tinted walls—you want to make sure the plaster or paint layer doesn’t peel off together with the hook when you try to remove it. 4️⃣. If it’s paper (photos, posters, or unframed graphics): There is a great life hack for hanging paper works using tape, paperclips, and magnets. Wrap a paperclip in tape and stick it to the wall where the corners of the artwork will be. Place the artwork over them, and secure it from the front using small magnets. This way, you don’t damage the artwork at all, and unless it’s a massive, heavy sheet of thick cardboard, the paper will hold perfectly. It depends on the wall type, the weight of the artwork, and whether or not you are willing to drill holes in the wall. 1️⃣ If it’s a large, heavy painting, you own the wall, and drilling is allowed: Drill the wall, insert 2–3 wall plugs (dowels), and screw in the screws. From there, you have a few options: The simplest way: Hang the painting by its stretcher bar directly onto the screws. For this, the screws should protrude from the wall: ideally by about 2 cm for a narrow stretcher bar, or 3–4 cm if the stretcher is wider. Using a wire/cord: If the painting already has a hanging wire or cord attached, hang it by that. In this case, a single hole might suffice, but if the artwork is exceptionally heavy, it’s still safer to use multiple anchor points. 2️⃣ If it’s a large, heavy painting, but you are renting (or can’t drill the walls, or can only drill the ceiling/make easily repairable modifications): The obvious solution: Don’t hang it at all. Choose a vertical painting and simply rest it on the floor, a chest of drawers, or a console table. The professional solution: Invest in a gallery hanging system (track system) that mounts to the ceiling rather than the wall. These systems use subtle, adjustable hooks on transparent cables or rods, allowing you to hang multiple paintings at once. Part 1. My first fruitful visit to Krakiw: 5 days of intense program with studying, communicating, holding workshops, working in teams, presenting our projects with 20 Ukrainian women artists in Galicia Museum in Krakiw within UW project. We also had a small inner show to see what each of us is creating. I’ve presented my #kuznetsovaflowersorexplosions project 🌸💥 🫂 It was an amazing opportunity to connect, find friends and colleagues, explore, gain new perspectives and ideas, and just enjoy being in a wonderful community.

Sometimes I wonder, who am I creating this series
Sometimes I wonder, who am I creating this series for? It doesn’t fit into easily readable artistic frameworks or trends: it is too conceptual, symbolic, and documentary regarding the military context for buyers of light and beautiful interior art, yet too decorative and life-affirming for the depressing and austere contemporary art you might find in museums (and in a rather classical painterly medium, at that). Gradually, I am coming to the realization that ‘Flowers or Explosions’ is meant for a special kind of modern intellectual collector: those who look toward the future and are interested in cutting-edge technologies, yet have grown too weary of screens.
