LINOLEUM Animation and Media Art Festival 2015

An animated film about the Radical chemical plant in Kyiv (Lisova district) and the environmental disaster that has been silenced for many years. From time to time, activists and the television return to this issue, but it remains largely unaddressed. I began working on the animation in 2015 as part of Kristina Solomoukha’s course “With Which Letter Does a Painting Begin?” I deliberately chose a “childlike” style and medium, creating a strong contrast with the gravity of the subject. Nominated for the Grand Prix at the LINOLEUM Animation and Media Art Festival, 2015.

“In a certain kingdom, in a certain magical state that no longer exists, the king had great ambitions. He wanted to be strong and invincible, and so he built a large and dangerous machine in one city — a factory, a sacred place according to the beliefs of his subjects. Those who worked at the factory were delighted: the salaries were twice the average, and they could retire at forty-five — if they lived that long… The great, dangerous machine more than lived up to its name.
But a fairytale is a fairytale, and one not-so-beautiful day, a somewhat wicked fairy decided it was time for the magical state to come to an end. The king was powerless. She cast a curse that spread across the entire land and eventually descended upon the roof of the great, dangerous machine. The roof could not withstand the weight of time and enchantment and collapsed, crushing the reservoirs of mercury and other hazardous chemical compounds beneath it. The factory turned into a poisonous octopus, with mercury tentacles of death. The toxins spread across a vast area, seeping into the soil, the metal structures, and evaporating into the air.
In place of the old state, a new one emerged. The city grew into a мегаполіс, surrounding the Octopus with offices, shopping malls, and business centers.
And what of the kings? Quietly, they fenced the Octopus off from curious eyes and destroyed the obvious evidence of its toxicity. And so the Factory-Octopus became nothing more than a fairytale, a myth, or even an unknown story for the inhabitants of the entire metropolis. Meanwhile, trusting citizens live nearby: they go shopping, go to work, and store goods in deadly proximity to the Octopus, which continues to do its work. And the kings remain silent, the people keep breathing, and the Octopus lives on. Whether in a fairytale or in a myth…”
