  • Alena Kuznetsova is a professional multidisciplinary artist born in 1986, who lives and works in Kyiv, Ukraine.


  • Her artistic practice engages with ecological and feminist perspectives, focusing on the fragile balance between humans and nature in contexts shaped by environmental transformation, conflict, and displacement. The artist is particularly interested in how these conditions generate new forms of interdependence, vulnerability, and resilience.


  • Participated in Ukrainian and international shows and is an author of 14 solo projects. Her creative work includes painting, graphics, video, installation, photography, text art, and ceramic sculpture. Alena’s artistic practice has changed a lot since 2022.


  • She’s been focusing mainly on abstract painting and color research from 2008 to 2021. Her art has changed critically with the full-scale invasion. Alena came out to her international audience and colleagues with a war agenda and began volunteering a lot as a talking head and in written interviews, spreading the word. The artist came back to social issues in recent projects since 2022: Ukraine is Me, To the River, Flowers or Explosions, Broad Perspective, Nearly Three Years, Horizontal Links.

I’ve bought this vintage vyshyvanka at Kosiv rynok, Pokuttya, Ukraine, in June 2022, as a symbol of cultural memory, resistance and love to my homeland ❤️🇺🇦 I love unusual colour gamma of the embroidery and tender little flowers on it, that goes perfect with my ongoing painting Flowers or Explosions🌸 Happy Independence Day of Ukraine! A story of my fuck up with the painting beginning. Not every artwork goes easy and successful on the every stage. To be honest, I was surprised (it’s a rare case), and even upset for a while, but then I thought: shit happens and it’s also an interesting lesson.🧐 And brief news from Kyiv in this video as well (a heavy ballistics shelling of Kyiv by russia tonight again…). #kuznetsovaflowersorexplosions


My Kyiv studio is in a usual 9-storey residential
My Kyiv studio is in a usual 9-storey residential building in a green district, surrounded by the parks, lakes, and greenery. I have amazing neighbours, who tend small patches of land near the house, and grow flowers there. This way, I have a pleasure to observe several tiny flower fields around the studio 🌸🌷🌹🌼🌻🪻 Today, while making some photos of my painting outside, I had a small talk with one woman, and she told me that she likes the tender color gamma of my works ☺️ The other neighbour couple marked that the paintings match the Phlox flowers in the garden perfectly and wondered if these are diamonds on the works?)) I decided it’s a good occasion to recall all the process, details, visualisations, back sides and even sketches with this pair: Flower Field 1, Flower Field 2, 80*60 cm each work, 2023✨ #kuznetsovaflowersorexplosions

“Medium is the message” – a famous saying in art.
“Medium is the message” - a famous saying in art. This means materials one uses to create is an important part of the statement, often pointing out the context, and another layer of meaning. Here I speak on the materials I use in the current new painting from #kuznetsovaflowersorexplosions series in progress.


Despite my 10 years of academic art education, and
Despite my 10 years of academic art education, and 10 of color studying later, along with studying of contemporary art, I got back to Ukrainian folk primitivism as a starting point for this series: open bold colours, children-like drawn flower-sign, and symbolic meaning, hidden in composition, symbols and names of the paintings. This works, made in a nowadays Kyiv, are about real freedom for me: the main value we are fighting for right now. 🌸🌊 (Sub)Sea Baby, 150*150 cm, oil, acrylic, my grandmothers knitted doilies, oil pastels on canvas.
