BALLET MECANIQUE
This series of works by Alena Kuznetsova departs from the previous, completely dissolved, and tranquil liquid series and addresses the composition, graphics, bordering abandoned aesthetics, layers of lines, and planes. There, traditional color as an independent medium is subjected to the form and is essentially of secondary significance, as a separate musical instrument in an orchestra: it just plays its part. Continuing the tradition of mixed technique, Alena takes these media apart into layers as the layers of memory, working without sketches and deciding at every stage on the choice of the next layer: acrylic, oil, spray paint, oil pastel, enamel, and again acrylic (the order may vary).
The Ballet Mécanique movie is known for its radically repetitive style and instrumentation. The musical score for the film was written by composer George Antheil, combining atonal music and jazz rhythms. This film, included in the exhibition together with the documentation of the work process and the works of the artists themselves, creates a complex organism-orchestra that unites different eras, ideas, artistic expressions, and art forms.

Broad Perspective (working title Stripes) is a long-term painting project developed between 2013 and 2021 during car journeys across Ukraine and abroad. The series emerged from reflections on the peculiar condition of being in transit — a state of existing almost “nowhere.” As a passenger, the artist observed the passing horizon and shifting landscapes, using the time of travel as a rare pause from the constant flow of information and obligations.
Following the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the project acquired a new layer of meaning. The works now evoke a heightened sense of fragility and temporariness. In recent years, the symbolic meaning of movement has changed profoundly. While travel may still offer expanded perspectives and opportunities — particularly for artists — it has also become more complicated and exhausting. With air travel unavailable from Ukraine, journeys have grown longer, familiar routes to the south remain inaccessible due to occupation, and some landscapes captured in these paintings may remain out of reach for years to come.
For many Western viewers, this series may appear relatively neutral, as they have not had to experience these limitations — and that, in itself, is something to be grateful for.
In a self-referential turn, travel became the fate of the series itself. After the invasion began, the works first traveled to Copenhagen, where some remain, and later continued to Brussels. Through this journey, the project has connected the artist with new communities as well as long-standing friends who offered support along the way. Now, they travelled from Brussels to Strasbourg, continuing the idea.

Війна забрала цю весну в усіх українців. Ми не відчували її, не насолоджувалися і не святкували народження нового життя, перших квітів і потепління. Це був загальний стрес, горе і багато роботи.
Лише коли настало літо, і я побачила, як розквітли мої улюблені півонії, я відчула, що знову ожила, і захотіла створювати мистецтво далі між відчуттям життя та смерті. Я насолоджувалася улюбленими квітами, а сама ідея квітки формально, як знак, нагадує мені вибухи, до яких я була дуже близька в кінці лютого. Від однієї точки до периферії, як розширення. Згодом я взнала, що є навіть українські гармати з назвою Піони. Ці вибухи досі відбуваються по всій Україні через те, що російські ракети бомблять наші цивільні об’єкти, ми досі воюємо та захищаємось від російських загарбників. А квіти продовжують цвісти, незважаючи ні на що.

The war took away this spring from all Ukrainians. We did not feel it, did not enjoy it, and did not celebrate the birth of a new life, the first flowers, and warming. It was general stress, grief, and a lot of work.
It wasn’t until summer came and I saw my beloved peonies in bloom that I felt better and wanted to create art further between the feeling of life and death. I enjoyed my favorite flowers, and the very idea of a flower formally, as a sign, reminds me of the explosions that I was very close to at the end of February. From one point to the periphery, as an extension. Later, I learned that there are even Ukrainian cannons called Peonies. These explosions are still happening all over Ukraine because russian missiles are bombing our civilian targets, we are still fighting and defending against russian invaders. And the flowers continue to bloom, despite everything.

The beginning of a new large painting from my Flowers or Explosions series. It’s a symbolic, primitive-style painting series that I started in 2022, with meaningful titles for each work. I planned to continue the series last year, but it was really hard to begin- I kept delaying and postponing it… Still, the process has finally started, despite all the difficulties with electricity, heating, water, and internet nowadays in Kyiv.
I work from the initial sketch, building up the first layers in the darkest and dullest colours, gradually moving toward lighter and brighter tones. At first, the painting looks strange and even ugly, but later it becomes much better, and interesting textures begin to appear.
Market size is basically a reality check on actual artist’s career growth. Market size helps assess liquidity, risk, and long-term value potential when it determines sustainable pricing and the pace of the artist’s career development, and it shows whether an artist’s success is structural or speculative. Just a few words about Alena Kuznetsova’s art market size as the intermediate result of the artist’s career.
Primary market (all available artworks: paintings, sculptures, and graphics (approximately): 190 artworks. Fifteen artists’ solo shows and (apparently) forty group exhibitions since 2008.
Secondary market (collected and sold artworks: paintings, sculptures, and graphics (approximately): 200 artworks in the last decade. Some paintings are available for being commissioned at the auction in Ukraine, UK and USA.

The artworks (graphics, paintings and sculptures) are privately owned and in collections in Ukraine, the USA, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Spain, Hong Kong, France and Sweden.
The artist operates in the upper-emerging or low-established segment of affordable artworks (till €10000) at the local (Ukrainian) context, with approximately 50% of sold artworks in one decade and a growing international collector base.
Alena has color studying and researching color in art for more than fifteen years since 2008. She took education (additional) from the teacher who continued the tradition of color studying created by the well-known founder of the method from Austria. Further about this person and the school of art that was a game-changer in the European art scene in twenty century.
Rudolf Steiner was born in 1861and was an Austrian philosopher, esoteric thinker, social reformer, and the founder of anthroposophy were a spiritual worldview that integrates science, art, and esotericism.
He is also known for founding Waldorf schools, biodynamic agriculture, anthroposophical medicine, and eurythmy were a form of movement art with some architectural projects, including the Goetheanum.
Steiner was deeply influenced by Goethe’s holistic approach to science and art in Dornach.
Dornach in Switzerland is a small town near Basel. It became the center of the anthroposophical movement because Steiner moved there in the 1910s with a group of followers. Why did he choose Dornach? Because neutral Switzerland provided stability during and also became a creative and spiritual hub for architecture, art, and performance and community members from many countries came to help build the Goetheanum.
The Goetheanum is the centrepiece of the anthroposophical movement. It is a major building in Dornach, designed by Steiner and there were two of them:
First Goetheanum (1913 – 22) was built almost entirely out of wood, with two large interlocking domes in highly experimental architecture with flowing, organic forms, and was burned down in 1922 (one of the most important lost buildings of XX century art and architecture).
Second Goetheanum (1924 – 28) was built in reinforced concrete and was much larger and more monumental with features sculptural forms without right angles – everything feels “alive” and shaped by movement.
It was used for performing arts like eurythmy, drama, music, conferences, and research; the headquarters of the anthroposophical society and art exhibitions. Also, the building remains a UNESCO-listed modernist architectural landmark.
Goetheanum is special because it’s unique and combines spiritual philosophy, experimental architecture, art, performance, and education; community life and cultural activity. Many architects (including some early modernists) were influenced by Steiner’s biomorphic forms.
Rudolf Steiner’s influence on art is much bigger than most people realise. He wasn’t just a philosopher – he was a visionary who reshaped modern art, architecture, theatre, and even color theory.
Steiner’s architectural and sculptural ideas, like flowing shapes, no right angles, forms that seem alive, were directly influenced by early modernist and later organic architecture.
Artists and architects inspired by Steiner include Le Corbusier, Hans Scharoun (organic architecture), Frei Otto, Imre Makovecz, and well-known Joseph Beuys (openly referenced Steiner in his work).
Joseph Beuys was the most important “Steiner-influenced” artist who explicitly incorporated Steiner’s ideas into social sculpture, expanded concept of art, the role of creativity in healing society, and the idea that every human is an artist. Beuys used felt, fat, beeswax, and other materials symbolically – often echoing Steiner’s thinking about warmth, metamorphosis, and life processes.
Steiner developed a unique spiritual color theory influenced by Goethe, where the color is not just pigment, but an experience of inner movement
Steiner treated buildings as living organisms: The Goetheanum (1st and 2nd) became a model for the organic architecture, sculptural concrete, free-form interiors, and expressive structural surfaces.
Steiner revolutionised theatres’ stage design with colored light used emotionally and spiritually, the architecture of the theatre integrated with performance, and Eurythmy of course. It is a new art form of movement where sound becomes gesture. His theatrical experiments influenced avant-garde performance art and later movement arts.
In anthroposophical art movements, he didn’t want art to be illustrations of spirituality, but he wanted artists to see reality differently. This led to entire schools of art like anthroposophical painting (Wandtafelmalerei), sculptural work inspired by the Representative of Humanity and color therapy and painting therapy; many artists work in holistic, spiritual, or nature-based art referencing Steiner’s ideas even indirectly.
Steiner made art bigger, not just about objects or aesthetics, but about human development, perception, and society.
He died in Dornach in 1925.

Mushrooms symbolise transformation, decay, and renewal – they thrive on breaking down matter and creating life again.
The hidden mycelium networks beneath the soil can be metaphors for interconnectedness, ecosystems, and unseen systems in society or technology.
Their biology challenges our categories – fungi are neither plants nor animals, which opens space for speculative art and science fiction. Psychedelic mushrooms influence art movements, music, and literature, tying fungi to altered perception and creativity. Many cultures see mushrooms as magical or mysterious: fairy rings in folklore, sacred fungi in Mesoamerican rituals, or their appearance in Slavic tales.

В рамках української феміністичної мистецької резиденції 2024/2025, яка була організована Martin Roth-Initiative (MRI). MRI є спільним проектом ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) та Goethe-Institut. Результатом резиденції стали публікація та виставка ‘Віднайдене у Втратах’.

Український Дім представляє виставку «Віднайдене у втратах» — проєкт, що об’єднав 22 українських мисткинь у межах резиденції Ініціативи Мартіна Рота (MRI) для пошуку спільного мистецького висловлювання. Виставка зосереджується на підтримці жіночих голосів у процесі осмислення війни. Роботи учасниць утворюють колективний феміністичний архів пережитого досвіду: вони поєднують особисті історії в ширшу картину культурної пам’яті, нагадуючи, що навіть у найтемніші часи ми здатні відстоювати право на власний голос.
У роботах відображено повсякдення під час війни, досвід біженок, осмислюються травми і трансформації ідентичності. Деякі роботи представляють фантазії про альтернативні суспільства і способи життя — візії, що допомагають опиратися жорстокій реальності. Як і книжка, виставка складається з чотирьох розділів: «Територія і уява», «Ідентичність, травма», «Утопії і метафори», «Досвіди і спільноти». «Віднайдене у втратах» є свідченням сили жіночої солідарності та ролі мистецтва під час війни — як простору для рефлексії і відновлення агентності.

Результатом їхньої співпраці, спільного проведеного часу й дискусій стала друкована двомовна збірка проєктів «Віднайдене у втратах» / Meaning after Loss, яку презентують на відкритті.
Як і книжка, виставка складається з чотирьох розділів: «Територія і уява», «Ідентичність, травма», «Утопії і метафори», «Досвіди і спільноти». «Віднайдене у втратах» є свідченням сили жіночої солідарності та ролі мистецтва під час війни — як простору для рефлексії і відновлення агентності.
Представляючи цю виставку, Український Дім утверджує свою місію: підтримувати сучасне мистецтво як інструмент суспільного діалогу, розвивати міжнародні культурні зв’язки та плекати цінності відкритості, єднання і культурної пам’яті.
Під час відкриття відбудуться презентація збірки «Віднайдене у втратах» і перформативне читання «Казки про безсенсовність для дорослих» Юлії Ліннік у межах екскурсії виставкою від учасниць.

Українська феміністична мистецька резиденція 2024/2025 була організована Martin Roth-Initiative (MRI). MRI є спільним проектом ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) та Goethe-Institut. Це програма для митців, які перебувають у групі ризику, що повністю фінансується Міністерством закордонних справ Німеччини. Виставка та друк публікації були люб’язно профінансовані ifa Förderverein.
27 липня у MLYN Design Hub відкривається персональна виставка Альони Кузнєцової – Familiar Ground | Знайома земля.
Однойменна серія безпредметного живопису та кераміка з серії “Фантастичні гриби” були створені з ідеєю віднайти ресурс і опору, повернутись в місце, де можна наповнити себе.
Неквапливе задоволення відчувати фактуру олії, акрилу; структуру, густину матеріалу – навіть перед лицем смерті.
Альона Кузнєцова — мультидисциплінарна художниця, яка звертається екофеміністичних та соціальних питань в своїх проєктах. Займається дослідженням кольору і безпредметним живописом з 2008 року. Авторка 14 сольних виставок, учасниця резиденцій та публікацій в Україні і за кордоном.
There are projects–concepts, projects–symbols, projects–research, and there are projects–therapy, such as Familiar Ground. When I was creating these works — every one of them — I sought to find balance and a certain gentle structure that would warm one with a sense of safety, acting as therapy and support.
Familiar Ground is about my search for an inner foundation during a time when things were at their hardest. It is a practice of accumulating strength — dense, like a warm embrace. In these works, life itself is felt through color, which is mostly mature and seasoned, soft and harmonious. What unites them is a sense of grounding, rooting, landscape, broad gestures, and space.**
This kind of color grows beyond painting and extends into sculpture — into the ceramic series Fantastic Mushrooms. Clay and chamotte are remarkable, almost therapeutic materials, directly connected to the earth and to tradition, to Ukrainian applied arts. At the same time, the very concept of mushrooms carries deep personal connotations for me; it is the least studied kingdom in science, with immense potential and a vast diversity of forms and possibilities.

Є проєкти-концепції, є проєкти-символи, є проєкти-дослідження, а є проєкти-терапія, такі, як Знайома Земля. Коли я писала ці роботи, кожну з них, я прагнула знайти баланс і певну м’яку структуру, яка буде зігрівати відчуттям безпеки, буде діяти як терапія і підтримка.
Знайома Земля – про мій пошук внутрішньої опори в період, коли було найважче. Це практика накопичення сили, щільної, як теплі обійми. В цих роботах саме життя відчувається через колір, який здебільшого зрілий і досвідчений, м’який і гармонійний. Спільним є те, що вони всі про заземлення, укорінення, ландшафт, широкі рухи, простір.
Такий колір тут проростає з живопису далі – у скульптуру, серію кераміки Фантастичні Гриби. Глина, шамот – дивовижний і також терапевтичний матеріал, безпосередньо пов’язаний з землею і традицією, українським ужитковим мистецтвом. З іншої сторони концепція саме грибів має для мене глибокі особисті конотації; це найменш вивчене наукою окреме царство з величезним потенціалом і можливостями різних видів.

Моя частина в цій публікації доволі нетипова, а саме текст формату щоденника «Майже три роки». Моя мотивація участі у цій онлайн-резиденції, що тривала з жовтня, — саме робота з текстом, який мені чим далі — тим більше цікавий як самостійний медіа. Роботи моїх колежанок — досить різний спектр мистецьких медіа: фото, відео, документація, обʼєкти, живопис і звісно також текст… У нас не було однієї теми, але контекст обʼєднав нас: у всіх роботах відчувалось те, що ми всі зробили вибір залишитись в Україні, продовжуючи віднаходити сили і сенси.
Трохи вже розповідала про цю програму від MRI, Гете-інституту та Іфи ще в дописі від 31.03. , після фінальної поїздки у Цайц, Німеччина, на початку весни (в тому дописі відмітила всіх учасниць!).

Частина інтервʼю Irina Belan (у якої нещодавно вийшла друком власна книга!) зі мною для вересневого випуску французького арт-журналу Argument, 2024, присвяченого природі в мистецтві.
Краще пізно, ніж ніколи, опублікувати кілька чудових проникних питань Іри (вибач цей time gap!) саме про мою серію Квіти чи Вибухи, адже планую продовження. Хоча можливо, це не gap, а необхідна відстань і те, що я відчуваю саме зараз, кожної весни: квіти, що зʼявляються з землі так беззаперечно, наштовхують на роздуми…
І.Б.: 15 жовтня цього року виповнюється 100 років сюрреалізму. Я тебе вітаю як художницю з цим ювілеєм. Сюрреалізм з суто літературного феномену дуже швидко перетворився на мультикультурне явище. Очі у сюрреалізмі, наприклад у картинах Сальвадора Далі, або їх відсутність у картинах Рене Магрітта, відіграють важливу роль. Яку роль їм у своїх роботах відводиш ти? Означає чи ні їх присутність на твоїх полотнах, що ти звернулась саме до сюрреалістичних традицій?
А.К.: Дякую! Якщо звернутися до моїх робіт різних серій, ідея з очами виникла ще у 2019 році в моїй серії Relations with the Image. Там я використовувала очі-аплікації з тканини і бісеру, страз. Очі символізують внутрішнє бачення, передчуття невідворотності та інтуїції. У роботах із серії Flowers or Explosions я використовувала кристали Swarovski, щоб зробити написані олією очі ще виразнішими. Очі – це найважливіший орган для візуального митця, тому що все це стосується візуальної культури. “Camera Lucida. Reflections on Photography” Ролана Барта, “Techniques of the observer” Джонатана Крері, “Inside the White Cube” Брайана О’Доерті: є багато програмних книг про візуальну культуру XX століття, які торкаються питання ока, спостерігача і зображення. Символічне значення також стосується сучасного питання соціальних медіа та алгоритму, який вибирає, що нам показувати, а що ні. В серії Flowers or Explosions — це очі спостерігача подій, жахливих подій початку війни, свідками яких були всі українці. Мене наштовхнув на цю ідею символ з інтерфейсу соцмереж, що позначає «sensitive content», закресленого ока, коли реалії нашого життя почали приховувати налаштування алгоритмів, щоб не травмувати аудиторію. Але ми все одно все бачили, ми не могли не бачити. Після закінчення серії я почала про це думати, аналізувати, і більше схилятися до символізму, ніж до сюрреалізму, якщо говорити про мистецький напрямок. Cюрреалістичним є той світ, який нас оточує з 2014 (а тим більше – з 2022 року).
І.Б.: Зараз сучасно говорити про сторітелінг, про створення наративу у живопису. Яку роль ти відводиш сторітелінгу у своїй творчості? Чому, мені здається, що перший раз у твоєму досвіді, в тебе з’явилися потужна лінгвістична складова?
А.К.: Дякую, що помітила. Памʼятаю, що в своєму інтерв’ю цьому журналу Argument у 2022 році я сказала, що не знаю, яким тепер буде моє мистецтво після початку повномасштабного вторгнення, але точно воно має змінитись, бо змінилось все, і я сама. Я більше не можу бути в своїй бульбашці, я відчуваю себе частиною України, мого дому, культури, коханих людей. І коли все це намагаються знищити, я просто не можу ігнорувати це і мовчати, я хочу розповідати про це світові, попри біль і важкість такого наративу. Весною 2022 року, коли російський напад на нас був такий несподіваний і ситуація критична, треба було діяти швидко і відчувала, що не можу мовчати: я дала безліч усних і письмових інтерв’ю журналістам, телеканалам, платформам, блогерам і мистецтвознавцям про події, які відбувались буквально поруч. Мені здається, я навчилась розповідати історії з того часу. Мистецтво — навіть кращий спосіб, хоча і більш повільний, донести правду до світу, висловити свою позицію.
І, дійсно, в серії Flowers or Explosions, кожна картина є особливою історією, бо створювалась буквально посеред війни, де все відчувалось дуже гостро, бо всі ми пильно слідкували буквально кожного дня за тим, що відбувається в Україні. Це відображається в назвах робіт, наприклад, Свідок Землі, Free the Leopards, Контрнаступ або Storm Shadow. Про кожну картину тепер можу розповідати окремо і довго, бо кожна робота — символ надії, опору і сили, бо такі події дійсно вражають, у саме серце. Тепер я дуже саркастично ставлюсь до ідеї “художник — це той, кому є що сказати”. Як сказав зі сцени вручення Оскару український режисер “20 днів у Маріуполі” Мстислав Чернов, “краще б цього фільму ніколи не було…”
І.Б.: Як виникла серія “Квіти та вибухи”? Чому ти вийшла за рамки класичної техніки і додала до них своїх робіт колажі? Як вони збагатили твою графіку?
А.К.: Серія почалась весною 2022 року з невеличких робіт на папері формату А4, які я робила в Києві під обстрілами, коли в Києві ще не було Patriot, і коли кожна сирена могла означати кінець. Я багато волонтерила тоді і багато донатила військовим, госпіталям, друзям і знайомим, які їздили в гарячі точки і збирали на машини, обладнання, амуніцію: роздала майже всю поміч, що отримувала з-за кордону як з продажу робіт, так і з колаборацій і просто так від від людей, які знали мене як художника. Тому ці перші роботи відображали мій стан “на межі”. В якийсь момент в квітні я помітила, що весна дає своє: з землі зʼявляються перші квіти. Це був інсайт, дуже сильне відчуття, що життя продовжується. Я відчула, що люблю все що мене оточує: людей, землю, квіти. В травні я видихнула і придбала свої улюблені рожеві півонії, цілий букет у місцевої бабусі і була абсолютно щаслива лише від цього. Мабуть, це важко зрозуміти тим, хто не переживав близькість смерті протягом тривалого періоду і тотальну невизначеність, обмеження. В мене було велике полотно 150*150 см, і я використала його для картини Рожеві півонії, не роздумуючи, бо хотіла зловити момент, поки мої квіти так гарно пахнуть. Це була точка відліку серії: далі я розширила свій спектр матеріалів і підходів, а такий примітивний символ, як малюють діти, схожий одночасно на квітку і на вибух, перейшов з графіки і на великі полотна. Я обрала за основний рожевий колір – як символ опору болю і стражданням. Поряд з чорним. Як ствердження життя.
Квіти чи вибухи – також данина дадаїзму в колажному сенсі: але це не класичні паперові колажі. Я буквально ліпила, як скульптуру, щось тактильне, ті роботи, використовуючи якомога більше фактур, що були під рукою: бабусині серветки, пастозну олію, пастель, тканинну аплікацію, стрази і бісер, і навіть вишивку, щоб відчути це на дотик. Це давало мені відчуття, що я ще жива.
І.Б.: Давай знову звернемося до Бретону. “Розум, якій занурюється у сюрреалізм, знову переживає з палаючим хвилюванням найкращу частину дитинства”. Яку частину твої дитячі спогади займають у твоєї творчості тобто наскільки ти сюрреаліст?
А.К.: Цікаве питання. Воно для мене більше психологічне, ніж мистецькознавче. З початком війни, переживаючи так звану точку безумовного страху (що має коріння з дитинства), я ніби в якийсь момент впала у цей слабкий розгублений стан, мов дитина, що не має захисту. Потім гойдалки пішли у протилежний бік – у бік дитячого захвату, енергії життя і натхнення тим, що є тут і зараз і я можу творити далі. Це емоції, які можна відчути в роботах, тому вони такі безпосередні, не академічні, і навіть дикі (хоча також там є елементи, так би мовити, реалістичні). Мабуть, вони нагадують те відчуття тотальної свободи, з яким у мене асоціюється дитинство, особливо влітку.
В роботах Flowers or Explosions багато всього з мого дитинства: і рожеві півонії, і серветки бабусі Жені у вигляді квітів, і символ квітки-вибуху, схожий на дитячі малюнки. Може, це моє прагнення повернутись у дитячу безтурботність, яку, схоже, ми всі втратили через війну.

Amazing time with Ukrainian women artists within feministic residency with Martin Roth Initiative and @ifa.de support in Zietz, Germany in the beginning of March. This was an offline part of our long-term online art residency, with the common aim of a publication (good news: it will be a printed version too 🤩!)
Our projects, support, ideas, saturated program, workshops, and time in Leipzig were like a fresh air within a war reality for all of us. I’ve met a new community, which is an actual treasure for me nowadays. Thank you to all involved. If I missed someone to tag, please comment below. Love 💕

Питання, чи є “горизонтальною” українська мистецька та наукова спільнота, виявилось доволі дискусійним, адже навряд чи можна уявити повну відсутність конкуренції та мізогінії у цих сферах. Здатність підтримувати зв’язок і обмінюватися ресурсами та ідеями, коли колеги продовжують залишатися частиною єдиного «організму», дає можливіть для виживання і розвитку. Прикладом живої мережі, що функціонує як цілісний організм, є міцелій.
За втіленням принципу ризоми – мережевої децентралізованої системи, яка адаптується до змін і постійно формує нові зв’язки, міцелій у природі та горизонтальні зв’язки у соціумі – це нелінійні структури, які забезпечують взаємодію, обмін ресурсами і виживання в складних середовищах. Такий спосіб обміну інформацією між різними елементами однієї системи нагадує про їх взаємопов’язаність і акцентує множинність і відкритість до нових з’єднань. Чи можуть принципи таких гнучких систем втілюватись у суспільстві на заміну уявленням про лінійні й ієрархічні структури?
Чи може ця мрія стати реальністю нашого суспільства тут і тепер? Які умови потрібні для того, щоб люди не змагались, а колаборували, ділилися досвідом? Лабораторія Випадкові Події, як втім і деякі інші мистецькі резиденції, – була прикладом такої утопії, де, хоч і на доволі короткий термін, мисткині і науковиці мали спільну мету, однаковий для всіх ресурс (поживний ґрунт) і умови, де зароджувались нові взаємозв’язки та ідеї. Така собі багатовимірна структура, де всі точки взаємопов’язані і здатні до інтеграції.

The question of whether Ukraine’s artistic and scientific communities function as truly “horizontal” networks remains open to debate. It is difficult to imagine these fields being completely free of competition and misogyny. Yet, the ability to maintain communication, share resources, and exchange ideas — where colleagues function as part of a single “organism” — creates opportunities for both survival and growth. A compelling natural example of such a system is mycelium.
Embodied within the concept of the rhizome — a decentralized, networked system that constantly adapts and forms new connections — mycelium in nature, like horizontal connections in society, operates as a nonlinear structure. It facilitates interaction, resource exchange, and resilience in complex environments. The way information flows through such systems highlights their interconnectedness, multiplicity, and openness to new relationships.
Can the principles of these adaptive networks be applied to society, replacing rigid hierarchical structures with more fluid, cooperative ones? Can this vision become a reality here and now? What conditions are necessary for people to collaborate rather than compete, to share experiences instead of withholding them? The Laboratory of Serendipitous Events Initiative, along with other art residencies, has served as an example of such a utopian space — where, even if only briefly, artists and scientists shared a common goal, access to the same resources (a “fertile soil”), and conditions that fostered new relationships and ideas. It functioned as a multidimensional structure, where all points were interconnected and capable of integration.

З 1 до 16 березня в Національному центрі «Український Дім» відбудеться виставка «Випадкові події».
Це експериментальний проєкт, у якому технології переплітаються з художнім баченням, а ідеї народжуються у несподіваних поєднаннях.
Для першої частини виставка десять інноваторок разом із десятьма художницями переосмислили свої сфери діяльності та створили артоб’єкти на межі науки й творчості. Теми варіюються від глобальних викликів — ядерної безпеки, технологічних ризиків і відповідального використання ресурсів — до особистих: жіночої тілесності, простору для самовираження й інклюзивності.
Серед інсталяцій роботи: Альони Кузнєцової та Аліси Атаманчук, Катерини Тимошенко та Ольги Зоти, Олександри Клод та Алли Петренко-Лисак, Марії Леоненко та Настасі Клен, Катерини Шиман та Дарини Фес, Євгенії Лаптій та Олени Компанієць, Євгенії Григор`ян та Катерини Шаванової, Тетяни Чучко та Марини Левченко, Дар’ї Зименко і Тетяни Зубченко, Софії Брем і Лєри Полянськової.
Також на виставці «Випадкові події» представлена ретроспективна частина, яка досліджує роль жінок у мистецтві та науці, починаючи з післявоєнного часу (кінець 1940-х років) і до нашого сьогодення.
У цій частині — роботи мисткинь: Аліни Ламах, Галини Зубченко, Ади Рибачук, Алли Загайкевич, Лесі Заяць, Оксани Чепелик, Оксани Плисюк, Марії Куликівської, Ксенії Гнилицької, Дани Косміної, Алевтини Кахідзе та Азізи Ескендер.
А також науковиць: Антоніни Прихотько, Зоре Аблямітової, Катерини Ющенко, Надії Харчук, Ірини Вавілової, Світлани Краковської, Нани Войтенко, Катерини Терлецької, Олени Паренюк та Ольги Малюти.
Усі охочі зможуть долучитися до серії лекцій, дискусій та кураторських екскурсій, що проходитимуть упродовж виставки.

Refers to unpredictable evens, happening in our lives and changing everything (after Taleb). Looking back to my first Black Swan (100*100 cm, 2017), which has found its home in the USA — I will post that work on stories.
Love this calm color gamma, almost monochrome in this case: I’ve painted it only with black and white to let the texture play first. The perfect shade of linen for the canvas i was searching by myself through the textile stores in Kyiv.👌

“Стиснення, загасання, заспокоєння: те, що відбувається з природою взимку. Заглиблюючись у внутрішні процеси, я все більш виразно відчуваю всі нюанси, цикли, кольори, і, як наслідок, легше працювати з серією “Гама”, підлаштувавшись до зовнішніх сил, які циклічно змінюють одне одного. Ця серія апелює до межевого стану природи: подекуди більш, подекуди менш структурного, мінливого, і в той же час тихого.”
“Compression, attenuation, calming: what happens to nature in winter. Delving deeper into internal processes, I feel all the nuances, cycles, and colors more and more clearly, and as a result, it is easier to work with the “Gamma” series, adapting to external forces that cyclically change each other. This series appeals to the border state of nature: sometimes more, sometimes less structured, changeable, and quiet at the same time.”
It was created at my Kyiv studio, still during the war, at the end of summer, in August (which is ‘serpen’ in Ukrainian). The name also alludes to a famous gallery and a serpentarium (from my experience). It is a rather interesting story with the painting’s title because I had no idea how to name it in the beginning. Then I decided to ask for help with my fb profile, and my friends and people there advised me about 20 names. The most widespread was connected with August, and ‘Serpen’ with variations ☺️ Thankful everyone took part in co-creation, especially @sasha.horbatiuk , whose version with ‘Serpentine’ was the best for me! 🙏
Also many thanks to Dave, who gave me his stretchers with unusual sizes, after leaving Ukraine. It is made on it)
PSI was living my best life during those times, enjoying summer and new painting experiences in spite of the danger of missile attacks, which we are mostly used to.

Серія “Механічний балет” є художнім дослідженням таких понять, як рух, динаміка, композиція, їх взаємодії та впливу на емоційні поля, створення певних настроїв, які народжуються при поєднанні або перетинанні траєкторій рухів окремих об’єктів, масс, особистостей.
Динамічний безпредметний живопис Альони Кузнєцової із серії «Механічний балет» своєю композицією, фактурою, поєднанням різних медіа (від акрилу до емалей та аплікації) нагадує незвичайну музику (механічну чи може електронну), яка своїм звучанням складає оригінальні траєкторії танцю, що триває не тільки в просторі, але й у часі.
Ця серія картин присвячена художньому однойменному фільму, задуманому, написаному та спільно зрежисерованому художником Фернаном Леже у співпраці з режисером Дадлі Мерфі, який містить музичну партитуру композитора Джорджа Антейла 1924 року.
This series of works by Alena Kuznetsova departs from the previous, completely dissolved, and tranquil liquid series and addresses the composition, graphics bordering abandoned esthetics, layers of lines, and planes. There, traditional color as an independent medium is subjected to the form and is essentially of secondary significance. It is a separate musical instrument in an orchestra: it just plays its part. Continuing the tradition of mixed technique, Alena takes these media apart into layers as the layers of memory, working without sketches and deciding at every stage on the choice of the next layer: acryl, oil, spray paint, oil pastel, enamel, and again acryl (the order may vary).
Ballet Mécanique movie is known for its radically repetitive style and instrumentation. The musical score for the film was written by composer George Antheil, combining atonal music and jazz rhythms. This film, included in the exhibition together with the documentation of the work process and the works of the artists themselves, creates a complex organism-orchestra that unites different eras, ideas, artistic expressions, and art forms.

Aльона Кузнєцова — українська професійна міждисциплінарна художниця.
Працює з такими медіа, як живопис, графіка, ленд-арт, відео, керамічна скульптура та інсталяція, але провідним медіа все ж є живопис.
З 2008 року мала 14 персональних виставок, а також брала участь у багатьох групових проектах в Україні і за кордоном (Лондон, Берлін, Дорнбірн, Сеул, Мадрид, Краків, Валенсія, Копенгаген).
Основний фокус її художньої практики — образ у мистецтві, його трансформація, зміни і нашарування з часом, а також циклічний феномен життя та смерті в контексті воєнних подій останніх років в Україні. Художницю також цікавлять питання глядача і свідомості, ідентичтості і соціальних зв’язків, місця і грунту в проєктах останніх років.

Поява перших весняних квітів і купівля півоній у місцевої бабусі стали переломним моментом — свідченням, що життя триває попри руйнацію. Так з’явилося велике полотно «Рожеві півонії» (150×150 см) як спроба зафіксувати їхню вітальність, а рожевий колір став символом стійкості всупереч стражданню.
Згодом практика еволюціонувала до «колажного» підходу, перегукуючись із дадаїстами часів Другої світової. Роботи збираються з фрагментів: пастозного живопису, вишивки, аплікацій та в’язаних гачком бабусиних серветок, які поєднують сучасне бачення з традиційними ремеслами — нашими культурними точками опори. У 2022–2023 роках серія увібрала елементи примітивізму та дитячих спогадів (серветки як трафарети, образ півоній), що виникли з прагнення повернутися до стану безумовного щастя. Натомість символ «ока» втілив роль вимушених спостерігачів травми, яку соцмережі маркували як «чутливий контент». Назви робіт (Storm Shadow, Це вітер чи ППО?, Контрнаступ) прямо фіксували мінливий контекст.
З початку 2026 року настрій серії трансформувався: із посиленням України та появою ефективного озброєння роботи почали транслювати відчуття сили, суб’єктності та успіхів нашої боротьби.

Flowers or Explosions
In the conditions of war, the state of a ‘split consciousness’ has become a physical reality, where everyday life coexists with the constant threat of destruction. The series was born in the spring of 2022 in Kyiv under heavy bombardment; the first works on A4 paper became a direct reflection of being ‘on the edge.’
The appearance of the first spring flowers and buying peonies from a local elderly woman became a turning point—a testament that life continues despite systemic destruction. This led to the large-scale canvas ‘Pink Peonies’ (150*150 cm), an attempt to capture their vitality, making pink the central color of the series—a manifestation of resilience and an affirmation of life in the face of suffering.
Over time, my practice evolved into a ‘collage’ approach, echoing the Dadaists who also turned to collage during World War II. I literally assemble these works from fragments: impasto painting, embroidery, fabric appliqué, and my grandmother’s crocheted doilies. These elements merge a contemporary vision with traditional Ukrainian crafts, creating anchor points within our cultural heritage.
Throughout 2022–2023, the series absorbed elements of primitivism and childhood memories (doilies used as stencils, and peonies as a symbol of early childhood), arising from a desire to return to a state of unconditional happiness overshadowed by war. Conversely, the symbol of the ‘eye’ embodied our role as forced witnesses to trauma, even as social media flagged these images as ‘sensitive content.’ The titles of the works (Storm Shadow, Is It the Wind or Air Defense?, Counteroffensive) directly captured the shifting context of the war.
Since the beginning of 2026, the mood of the series has transformed: as Ukraine grew stronger and began developing effective weaponry, my works started to channel a sense of strength, agency, and the triumphs of our struggle.

We invite you to an artist talk and conversation with Alena Kuznetsova as part of the personal exhibition Flowers or Explosions at Forsa Gallery. The artist will talk about the idea of the project, the symbolism of each work and its technique, as well as the titles of the works in the context of recent events in Ukraine; what is the connection between the flower and the explosion, as well as about the eye of the observer of events, which is present in many works. Let’s consider the objects with bones and flowers that the artist created purposely for the exhibition in partnership with the National Natural Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and Kvitkarna Yu.

Forsa Gallery представляє виставку Альони Кузнєцової “Квіти чи вибухи”, в якій художниця звертається до осмислення шизофренічної дихотомії квітучого життя та смерті.
До проекту увійшли картини, графічні роботи на папері та об’єкти (живі квіти, кістки тварин у скляних колбах-вазах), над якими Альона працювала впродовж 2022 та 2023 років, що дає можливість прослідкувати рефлексію автора щодо війни від самого початку.
В перші місяці вторгнення всі українці пережили тяжкий стрес, який забрав відчуття весни, краси пробудження природи, але поступово ми навчились жити, працювати і навіть знаходити натхнення перебуваючи занадто поряд з війною.
В своїх зворушливих картинах художниця використовує багатошарову мішану техніку, що включає живопис, аплікацію, вишивку і цяткування бісером, звертаючись до традицій українського ужиткового мистецтва, а також в’язані її бабусею серветки у вигляді квітів. Майже на всіх роботах присутні очі спостерігача подій, а кожна з робіт має назву того контексту, що був актуальним на момент її створення.
Художниця в проекті «Квіти чи вибухи» ставить ряд запитань. Що є війна, як не глобальні зміни, коли виживає той, хто гнучкіше пристосовується або до ризиків, або до умов, хто пройшов і подолав травму, і знаходить ресурс та сенс радіти, і отримувати задоволення? Що є квітка, як не маніфестація життя, така крихка і недовговічна? Вибух, як символ, схожий на квітку, з центру на периферію. Є навіть гармати з назвою Піони, а візуально вогонь їх пострілу схожий на півонію. Хіба це не символічно? Вибухи досі відбуваються по всій Україні, гинуть люди, а квіти продовжують цвісти, незважаючи ні на що.

Forsa Gallery presents Alena Kuznetsova’s exhibition “Flowers or Explosions”, in which the artist addresses the understanding of the schizophrenic dichotomy of blooming life and death.
The project includes paintings, graphic works on paper, and objects (fresh flowers, animal bones in glass vases), which Alena was creating during 2022 and 2023, making it possible to follow the author’s reflection on the war from the beginning.
In the first months of the invasion, all Ukrainians experienced severe stress, which took away the feeling of spring, and the beauty of the awakening of nature. Still, gradually we learned to live, work, and even find inspiration while being too close to the war.
In her touching paintings, Alena uses a multi-layered mixed technique, which includes painting, appliqué, embroidery and beading, referring to the traditions of Ukrainian applied art, as well as napkins in the form of flowers knitted by her grandmother. Almost all works have the eyes of an observer of events, and each of the works has the name of the context that was
relevant at the time of its creation.
The artist in the project “Flowers or Explosions” asks several questions. What is war, if not global changes, when the one who survives is the one who adapts more flexibly either to risks or to new conditions, who has gone through and overcome trauma, and who finds the resource and meaning to rejoice and get pleasure? What is a flower, if not a manifestation of life, so fragile and short-lived? Burst is like a flower-like symbol from the center to the periphery. There are even cannons called Peonies, and visually the fire of their shot looks like a peony. Isn’t that symbolic? Explosions still occur all over Ukraine, people die, and flowers continue to bloom, no matter what.
FORSA GALLERY is one of the leading art galleries in Kyiv, which represents contemporary art in Ukraine and abroad. Війна забрала цю весну в усіх українців. Ми не відчували її, не насолоджувалися і не святкували народження нового життя, перших квітів і потепління. Це був загальний стрес, горе і багато роботи.
Лише коли настало літо, і я побачила, як розквітли мої улюблені півонії, я відчула, що знову ожила, і захотіла створювати мистецтво далі між відчуттям життя та смерті. Я насолоджувалася улюбленими квітами, а сама ідея квітки формально, як знак, нагадує мені вибухи, до яких я була дуже близька в кінці лютого. Від однієї точки до периферії, як розширення. Згодом я взнала, що є навіть українські гармати з назвою Піони. Ці вибухи досі відбуваються по всій Україні через те, що російські ракети бомблять наші цивільні об’єкти, ми досі воюємо та захищаємось від російських загарбників. А квіти продовжують цвісти, незважаючи ні на що.

The war took away this spring from all Ukrainians. We did not feel it, did not enjoy it, and did not celebrate the birth of a new life, the first flowers, and warming. It was general stress, grief, and a lot of work.
It wasn’t until summer came and I saw my beloved peonies in bloom that I felt better and wanted to create art further between the feeling of life and death. I enjoyed my favorite flowers, and the very idea of a flower formally, as a sign, reminds me of the explosions that I was very close to at the end of February. From one point to the periphery, as an extension. Later, I learned that there are even Ukrainian cannons called Peonies. These explosions are still happening all over Ukraine because russian missiles are bombing our civilian targets, we are still fighting and defending against russian invaders. And the flowers continue to bloom, despite everything.

Демонстрація проєкту послідовно проходить у просторах трьох інституцій організаторів проєкту. Першою локацією став виставковий простір Інституту проблем сучасного мистецтва, наразі готується відкриття у Центрі сучасного мистецтва М17, а згодом проєкт продовжиться в Національній академії мистецтв України.
Роботи сучасних українських та міжнародних митців в рамках проєкту розкривають українську візію волі, яка допомагає сьогодні українському народові акумулювати свої сили для переможної боротьби проти російської агресії.

It wasn’t until summer came and I saw my beloved peonies in bloom that I felt better and wanted to create art further between the feeling of life and death. I enjoyed my favorite flowers, and the very idea of a flower formally, as a sign, reminds me of the explosions that I was very close to at the end of February. From one point to the periphery, as an extension. Later, I learned that there are even Ukrainian cannons called Peonies. These explosions are still happening all over Ukraine because russian missiles are bombing our civilian targets, we are still fighting and defending against russian invaders. And the flowers continue to bloom, despite everything.

The new Brussels Gallery Portraits International marks one year of the war against Ukraine with a fund-raising exhibition of 12 Ukrainian artists showing original works and art prints. The exhibition curated by Claire Soper is organized in collaboration with Tsekh Gallery in Kyiv, the James Butterwick Gallery in London, and with the help of Art Dealer, Katia Vozianova and journalist/contemporary art researcher Iryna Belan.
15% of sales of all artworks will be donated to UNHCR humanitarian relief actions and the Takshtab Charity, directly supporting displaced mothers and children under 3 in Ukraine.
Portraits of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be displayed in the gallery and auctioned online worldwide during the six-week exhibition. 100% of the auction proceeds will be donated equally to good causes. Portraits were newly made by this year’s gallery exhibitors Dutch painter Toon Teeken, Belgian Chilian artist Carlos Becerra and by other volunteers.
Portraits International is a new art gallery, bookstore, and academy, dedicated to the world of portraiture. Next to art, the gallery will offer biographies, lectures, courses, competitions, and team-building exercises in multiple languages, linked to the themes of the exhibitions. Portraitists, writers, and filmmakers can use the new gallery to find clients worldwide interested in commissioning a quality portrait or biography.

The long journey of these paintings was probably destined for them by fate: this exhibition includes 7 of my works from two series about the road – Broad Perspective and Kill bill. The history of both series began somewhere at the same time back in 2013 (!) both during the long car trip. Now it took almost a year, a big hook through Copenhagen, and getting to know a few more wonderful people, so that the works finally got to the Portraits International gallery for the Ukrainian 12 group exhibition, together with the graphics of Oleksandr Bogomazov (!) from gallery partner James Butterwick. It is also symbolic that in 2022-2023, all physical movements from Ukraine to the West also became much longer because of the war, even more time and reason for deep immersion, the landscape outside the window relentlessly reminds me of my Stripes and Kill bill (I realized this back in the fall), not only from the window of a car, and now also a bus, and a train, and an airplane, because I continue to document the material for further works.

The war took away this spring from all Ukrainians. We did not feel it, did not enjoy it, and did not celebrate the birth of a new life, the first flowers, and warming. It was general stress, grief, and a lot of work.
It wasn’t until summer came and I saw my beloved peonies in bloom that I felt better and wanted to create art further between the feeling of life and death. I enjoyed my favorite flowers, and the very idea of a flower formally, as a sign, reminds me of the explosions that I was very close to at the end of February. From one point to the periphery, as an extension. Later, I learned that there are even Ukrainian cannons called Peonies. These explosions are still happening all over Ukraine because russian missiles are bombing our civilian targets, we are still fighting and defending against russian invaders. And the flowers continue to bloom, despite everything.

‘Art through War’ Exhibition of contemporary art and charity auction at Urban Space 500 from 12 till 28 of August (Kyiv, Ukraine) with “Flowers or Explosions II (70*50 cm, 2022)

Kill bill is my dialogue with Kyiv city. Abandoned billboards – are a widespread phenomenon in Ukraine, but also I’ve seen some examples worldwide. The places for ads, there are plenty of them along the roads and in the cities. The natural death on billboards is ironic since it is impossible to remove rubbish advertisements deliberately. The series raises questions about the mindless consumption of goods and visual noise. The Kill bill series is a work on the verge of balancing abstraction and the figurative that captures, and flirts with the notion of the visual Kyiv urban environment (that forms our aesthetic taste), ready-made and time.
The title of this project shares its name with the famous movie “Kill Bill,” in this case “bill” is a reduction from the “billboard”.

I am so impressed by this show The Art of Resistance at the @expos_artgemesi !
The photo with Sasha’s portrait is just a small part of the exhibition, which actually covers two floors of a very beautiful modern space with works by about 50 Ukrainian artists (special thanks and super respect to curators @pechenman and @y.stepanok, who did enormously great job and wrote ALL the names of the participants in Facebook event! ).
And I was personally very impressed to see this painting, printed for an exhibition probably 1-in-1 (yes, the original is still in Kyiv, but soon hope it will reach Western Europe). I was waiting for only small posters of the beginning of the war among my works there. @sasha.horbatiuk joked he has a feeling like he is in Valencia)
