Ukrainian 12 | Group exhibition at Portraits International gallery (Brussels, Belgium)

The new Brussels Gallery Portraits International marks one year of the war against Ukraine with a fund-raising exhibition of 12 Ukrainian artists showing original works and art prints. The exhibition curated by Claire Soper is organized in collaboration with Tsekh Gallery in Kyiv, the James Butterwick Gallery in London, and with the help of Art Dealer, Katia Vozianova and journalist/contemporary art researcher Iryna Belan.

15% of sales of all artworks will be donated to UNHCR humanitarian relief actions and the Takshtab Charity, directly supporting displaced mothers and children under 3 in Ukraine.
Portraits of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be displayed in the gallery and auctioned online worldwide during the six-week exhibition. 100% of the auction proceeds will be donated equally to good causes. Portraits were newly made by this year’s gallery exhibitors Dutch painter Toon Teeken, Belgian Chilian artist Carlos Becerra and by other volunteers.
Portraits International is a new art gallery, bookstore, and academy, dedicated to the world of portraiture. Next to art, the gallery will offer biographies, lectures, courses, competitions, and team-building exercises in multiple languages, linked to the themes of the exhibitions. Portraitists, writers, and filmmakers can use the new gallery to find clients worldwide interested in commissioning a quality portrait or biography.

The long journey of these paintings was probably destined for them by fate: this exhibition includes 7 of my works from two series about the road – Broad Perspective and Kill bill. The history of both series began somewhere at the same time back in 2013 (!) both during the long car trip. Now it took almost a year, a big hook through Copenhagen, and getting to know a few more wonderful people, so that the works finally got to the Portraits International gallery for the Ukrainian 12 group exhibition, together with the graphics of Oleksandr Bogomazov (!) from gallery partner James Butterwick.
It is also symbolic that in 2022-2023, all physical movements from Ukraine to the West also became much longer because of the war, even more time and reason for deep immersion, the landscape outside the window relentlessly reminds me of my Stripes and Kill bill (I realized this back in the fall), not only from the window of a car, and now also a bus, and a train, and an airplane, because I continue to document the material for further works.

After some months of planning together with Julia Dmukh and the generous support of the Embassy of Ukraine, we are so pleased to welcome you to a fundraising event for the people of Ukraine at the gorgeous Gallerie Lorien. There will be paintings, ceramics, posters – all of the works are by Ukrainian artists, some living in Denmark and some in Ukraine and abroad. All transactions will go via the Denmark based charitable foundation, Bevar Ukraine.

Від початку, цей проєкт мав задум як розмірковування про місце, яке відсутнє: ви ніби знаходитесь “ніде” під час руху. Мені подобалось бути в дорозі, тому що це можливість нудьги – справжнього відпочинку від потоку справ та інформації. Як пасажир, я можу глибше зазирнути у себе в процесі руху, у споглядання горизонтів і змін пейзажу.

З початком повномасштабної війни 2022 року, цей проєкт набув глибшого сенсу. Зараз в ньому значно більше відчувається крихкість і тимчасовість, ніж раніше. Символічна наповненість і зміст поняття “переміщення” змінилась за останній час для багатьох. З однієї сторони, є дійсно широкі перспективи і можливості для тих, хто може виїжджати, зокрема мисткинь. З іншої – дорога стала примусово довшою і виснажливою за відсутності авіасполучення з України, звичні улюблені маршрути на південь зараз недоступні через окупацію, а деякі зафіксовані пейзажі я ще, мабуть, довго не побачу.

Ця серія виявилась пророчою і самореферентною, адже подорож стала її долею: з початком вторгнення вона поїхала спочатку в Копенгаген, частково залишившись там, а далі більша частина робіт поїхала у Брюссель. Завдяки цьому проєкту я зустріла багатьох чудових людей в цих країнах, а також старих знайомих, які мені допомогали. Перспективи і мандри продовжуються!

Broad Perspective (working title Stripes) is a long-term painting project developed between 2013 and 2021 during car journeys across Ukraine and abroad. The series emerged from reflections on the peculiar condition of being in transit — a state of existing almost “nowhere.” As a passenger, the artist observed the passing horizon and shifting landscapes, using the time of travel as a rare pause from the constant flow of information and obligations.

Following the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the project acquired a new layer of meaning. The works now evoke a heightened sense of fragility and temporariness. In recent years, the symbolic meaning of movement has changed profoundly. While travel may still offer expanded perspectives and opportunities — particularly for artists — it has also become more complicated and exhausting. With air travel unavailable from Ukraine, journeys have grown longer, familiar routes to the south remain inaccessible due to occupation, and some landscapes captured in these paintings may remain out of reach for years to come.

In a self-referential turn, travel became the fate of the series itself. After the invasion began, the works first traveled to Copenhagen, where some remain, and later continued to Brussels. Through this journey, the project has connected the artist with new communities as well as long-standing friends who offered support along the way. The perspectives — and the journeys — continue.

З однієї сторони, є дійсно широкі перспективи і можливості для тих, хто може виїжджати, зокрема мисткинь. З іншої – дорога стала примусово довшою і виснажливою за відсутності авіасполучення з України, звичні улюблені маршрути на південь зараз недоступні через окупацію, а деякі зафіксовані пейзажі я ще, мабуть, довго не побачу.

Ця серія виявилась пророчою і самореферентною, адже подорож стала її долею: з початком вторгнення вона поїхала спочатку в Копенгаген, частково залишившись там, а далі більша частина робіт поїхала у Брюссель. Завдяки цьому проєкту я зустріла багатьох чудових людей в цих країнах, а також старих знайомих, які мені допомогали. Перспективи і мандри продовжуються!

Broad Perspective (working title Stripes) is a long-term painting project developed between 2013 and 2021 during car journeys across Ukraine and abroad. The series emerged from reflections on the peculiar condition of being in transit — a state of existing almost “nowhere.” As a passenger, the artist observed the passing horizon and shifting landscapes, using the time of travel as a rare pause from the constant flow of information and obligations.

Following the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the project acquired a new layer of meaning. The works now evoke a heightened sense of fragility and temporariness. In recent years, the symbolic meaning of movement has changed profoundly. While travel may still offer expanded perspectives and opportunities — particularly for artists — it has also become more complicated and exhausting. With air travel unavailable from Ukraine, journeys have grown longer, familiar routes to the south remain inaccessible due to occupation, and some landscapes captured in these paintings may remain out of reach for years to come.

In a self-referential turn, travel became the fate of the series itself. After the invasion began, the works first traveled to Copenhagen, where some remain, and later continued to Brussels. Through this journey, the project has connected the artist with new communities as well as long-standing friends who offered support along the way. The perspectives — and the journeys — continue.
